Food Allergies and Fast Food
Okay, this is where the real headaches start when dealing with, and trying to avoid, food allergies when you’re out and about. Having fast food for dinner can be a real nightmare when avoiding allergens, but fast food chains are really starting to make it easier when identifying what products they have that are safe to eat. Some even make allergen safe versions. For example, Domino’s Pizza, Pizza Hut and others provide Gluten-free bases, you can order your Pizza without cheese or other toppings. If in doubt, you can always ask the Server or Manager about the food they offer. They usually have an information book that lists all the ingredients they use, which can make identifying safe foods easier. Most fast food chains have allergen information listed on their respective websites, which can make things a little easier when deciding on what to eat. Also, some meals can be custom made, avoiding allergens altogether.
Restaurants are increasingly accommodating food allergies. Asking the waiter or Maître D if the establishment caters for food allergies, you can find out what options are available. You may be able to speak with the chef about modifying or customising a meal. Restaurants do take food allergies very seriously. They take every precaution possible, including cleaning the kitchen and all utensils to avoid cross contamination. So thankfully food allergies and fast food can coexist.
